Apple is roundly expected to release its very first periscope lens in the iPhone 15 lineup next month, with analyst Ming-Chi Kuo now reporting that he expects that the feature will be exclusive to the high-end iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Apple has previously limited the highest end features to its bigger phones and it now seems that it will follow suit with the periscope lens, a feature that will allow for increased optical zoom capabilities.
It does that by using an angled mirror, much like a periscope on a submarine, to allow the camera’s sensor to be rotated. That’ll create a further distance between lens and sensor, allowing for improved zoom. To offer a similar zoom without such a periscope would require the iPhone to be much thicker.
It isn’t yet known what optical zoom the new device will offer, but it will be significantly improved over the 3x that is currently available to iPhone 13 Pro owners.
As for future models, Kuo appears to believe that Apple will trickle the zoom feature down to the iPhone 16 Pro in 2024, although that’s still some way off being released.
Before all of that, Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 14 lineup this fall, likely in or around September. Two 6.1-inch models and two 6.7 inch models are expected to be unveiled, with only the Pro models packing an improved A16 chip. The non-Pro models will instead retain the A15.
