There have been ongoing rumors that Apple will release a foldable iPhone in the future and with Samsung and Google already having foldables of their own, it seems like it will only be a matter of time before Apple follows suit.
Now, a new report claims that Samsung Display is the company that will produce the foldable displays for Apple and that the company has made changes to its development team ahead of production.
The report, coming out of The Elec, claims that Samsung Display is working to make sure that it has its ducks in a row ahead of an expected foldable device. Samsung isn’t likely to be alone in building foldable displays for Apple, however, with LG Display also thought to be working on displays of around 20 inches in size.
However, it isn’t clear what that device will be — there have been rumors of a laptop with a foldable display being in development for months, for example.
The Elec notes that Samsung has been working on foldable displays for years, giving it plenty of know-how ahead of any Apple collaboration.
Samsung Display is leading this market by supplying exclusive foldable phone panels from Samsung Electronics’ first-generation foldable phones launched in 2019 to Samsung’s fifth-generation foldable phones this year. This time, it is expected to try to prevent competitors from entering the market by dev out folding products and panel development functions within the development team A. Samsung Display and LG Display are already working on Apple’s foldable product projects such as 20.25 inches.
As for when any of this will turn into a shipping product, it’s still difficult to know. However, there have been reports suggesting that Apple intends to launch its first foldable as soon as 2024 but display analyst Ross Young believes that a foldable iPhone won’t arrive until a year later in 2025.
