Apple will likely also use its own custom microLED displays on future iPhones, iPads, and Macs according to a new report. The company is already said to be working on custom microLED displays for its future Apple Watches.
Apple was already thought to be developing microLED panels for those Apple Watch following a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
Now, Gurman is back to add further color to that report by saying that Apple is now expected to bring that same technology to more products.
With Apple’s 2024 Apple Watches thought to be the first that will move to microLED displays that are customized by Apple but possibly built by LG Display, Gurman confirmed that it’s the Apple Watch Ultra that will benefit initially. But after that, the same technology will move throughout Apple’s other lineups.
The screens will show up first in an update to the Apple Watch Ultra currently planned for the end of 2024. I’d expect them to then make their way to the iPhone a few years after that, and maybe, one day, iPads and Macs.
The use of microLED technology will allow for brighter displays than are currently offered, while improved colors and better contrast ratios should also be expected.
While Gurman does clearly have solid sources inside of Apple, there is always the chance that there will be tweaks to this timeline, so don’t be surprised if something changes between now and those new microLED products going on sale.
