Apple has already been rumored to be working on new AI technology that will improve the capabilities of Siri on its devices and now a new report claims that it might be ready in time for iOS 18 to arrive next year.
That’s according to a new report by MacRumors which is based on a research note from Jeff Pu working for Hong Kong-based investment firm Haitong International Securities.
According to a research note seen by MacRumors, Apple is likely to build hundreds of AI servers ready for the big rollout.
In a research note on Wednesday, Pu said his supply chain checks suggest that Apple is likely to build a few hundred AI servers in 2023, and significantly more next year. He believes Apple will offer a combination of cloud-based AI and so-called “edge AI,” which involves more on-device data processing. He added that patience will be required with Apple’s rollout of generative AI, as the company considers how to use and process personal data in a way that aligns with its commitment to customer privacy.
If Apple does manage to make its 2024 target then it could mean that iOS 18 will be the first software to benefit from the new capabilities, just in time for the arrival of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro devices in September of that month.
It still isn’t immediately clear what new capabilities the push into AI will bring to Apple’s platforms, but Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously reported that Apple is working on Large Language Models like those that power the popular ChatGPT tool.
