Apple is expected to announce a new MacBook Pro sporting improved M2 Pro chips at some point this year and a new report claims that those chips are set to enter mass production just in time.
Taiwans’s Commercial Times is reporting that TSMC will begin mass production of its 3nm chips by September, and that the chips for Apple will enter production by end of this year.
That could give Apple time to get the chips into machines in time to release the new MacBook Pro before the end of the calendar year.
This news would back up previous claims by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman that has Apple releasing the new MacBook Pro this year, with updated 14 and 16-inch models in the works. He did suggest that Apple could aim for a release in the first half of next year as well, leaving a little wiggle room.
Apple’s current M2 chip is only available in the 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, but the M2 Pro is the next rung up the ladder.
We can also expect M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips to arrive in due course, while some rumors have an M2 Extreme joining the stable — likely to power a Mac Pro that would see the Intel to Apple silicon transition finally be completed.
Interestingly, an earlier report from TrendForce stated that TSMC would be scaling back its 3nm chip production plans because of some delays from Intel. While that may factor into production of the A17 chip for the iPhone, how this affects the chips for a new MacBook Pro, remains to be seen.
