While all of the talk about the 2023 iPhone has so far centered around the expected switch to a custom 5G modem and away from one built by Qualcomm, there might be further change in terms of the display, too.
In the case of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, BOE has manufactured OELD panes out of two Chinese factories which accounts for around 10% of all iPhone displays produced in 2021.
However, a new report by The Elect and based on UBI research, suggests that BOE will expand its manufacturing capacity to the point of being able to build 144,000 substrates per month. The current limit is just 96,000, with BOE expected to manange this by the fourth quarter of 2022.
Samsung, the current leader in iPhone display manufacturing, can manage 14,000 substrates per month. This all means that BOE will become a serious competitor to the incumbent.
However, the real issue appears to be one that will face LG Display, with Apple being the only client it currently produced Gen 6 OLED panels for. If Apple’s demand slows because of an increase in orders from BOE, LG could suffer.
Chinese display giant BOE was in the process of converting its three factories __ B7, B11 and B12 __ to manufacture smartphone flexible OLED panels for Apple, analyst firm UBI Research has claimed.
Because of this, BOE will likely overtake LG Display as the larger OLED supplier for iPhones by 2023, UBI Research CEO Choong Hoon Yi said at an online seminar on Friday
AS things stand, the 2023 iPhones are shaping up to be a big deal, at least on the inside!
