Apple has today finally released its BeatsX wireless earphones following a delay which saw the original Fall 2016 launch window come and go. Now that the earphones are here though, buyers can pick them up from Apple’s online or retail store for $149.95 in White, Black, Blue and Gray color options. Shipping for online orders estimates range from between one day and a week, depending on the color chosen.
The BeatsX arrive into a market which also plays host to Apple’s other recent wireless earphone release, the Apple-branded AirPods.
Both pairs of earphones feature Apple’s new W1 chip which is designed for easy pairing, and the BeatsX offer all of the same connectivity features of the AirPods as a result. Charging is handled via an included Lightning cable – there’s also a case included, along with tips of differing sizes – and a single charge is good for around 8 hours of continuous use.
Where the BeatsX have the AirPods licked is the inclusion of an in-line controller. With the BeatsX’s use of a wire which connects the two earphones rather than the AirPods’ completely wireless design, they have the luxury of having room for a controller for changing tracks and increasing or decreasing volume.
This is something the AirPods cannot offer, with a reduced featureset available via the tapping of an earpiece or if users wish they can use Siri instead.
Ultimately, which of the BeatsX and AirPods you prefer will depend on whether you can use in-ear earphones without any discomfort and whether you’d rather the fully wireless design of the latter. We know which we would plump for, but with the price almost identical – the AirPods retail for $10 more – the choice really does come down to features and comfort. We’ll let you decide which is for you.
As mentioned earlier, you can get BeatsX today from either an Apple online store or a retail outlet for $149.95. Apple is also including free 3-month Apple Music subscription promo code to go with the purchase. You will need to register your headset to make use of the promo code and it can be used both with an existing Apple Music subscription as well as a new one.
