Apple is working on a new foldable display alongside LG Display, according to a report by Korean website, The Investor.
According to the outlet, Apple has decided to work with LG Display rather than Samsung in order to avoid the possibility of the technology finding its way into the company’s own smartphones. There have been rumors of this ilk in the past, as far back as December of 2016, when LG was said to be working to offer a foldable display as soon as 2018 with Apple alleged to be one of its potential partners.
LG’s flexible OLED panels have been shown off in various guises over the past year or two. One of those displays acts in a way similar to a newspaper, allowing the display itself to be rolled up. Another more closely mimics a book, allowing it to be folded over onto itself. It’s unknown whether either of these technologies interests Apple or if something new is in the works, but we don’t expect to be rolling an iPhone up any time soon.
Samsung already provides the OLED displays that will form part of the iPhone X and will likely also offer OLED panels for Apple’s 2018 iPhones. It is very unlikely that any foldable displays will find their way into any iPhone launched next year, but never say never when it comes to 2019. In fact, LG is already working on getting its OLED display manufacturing up to speed, with its panels expected to be used in iPhones as soon as, you guessed it, 2019. LG has a dedicated OLED display factory in China.
The iPhone X, Apple’s first OLED iPhone, will ship on November 3rd and as we are sure you already know, will not be cheap – an entry level iPhone X will cost $999 with the price increasing depending on which storage option you require.
