Donald Trump may have legions of loyal and passionate supporters who are keen to see him become the next President of the United States, but it certainly seems that he’s making enemies of equally as many people and businesses along the way.
To that end, Apple has officially told Republican leaders that it will not be providing any type of support, financial or otherwise, for the party’s upcoming 2016 Presidential convention. Apple has historically been more than willing to provide support, but this time is citing Donald Trump’s highly controversial comments in his public campaign as a reason to sit this one out.
The report cites Donald Trump’s often highly controversial comments about a wide ranging number of subjects, namely immigration, religion, minorities and women. Because of those comments, Apple has decided internally to not donate any money or technological support to the GOP convention as it has done so willingly in the past. In 2008, Apple provided support through a donation of approximately $140,000 worth of technology devices to Democratic and Republican events. No donation was forthcoming four years later due to the party not accepting corporate donations.
The interesting thing here is that Apple may not be going along with the ideas that Donald Trump holds, but not every major technology company is following suit by taking a stance against the Presidential candidate. Both Microsoft and Google have pledged technology and/or cash to the GOP convention which is set to take place next month.
Apple may not approve of Trump’s views on many things, and certainly doesn’t approve on how he is choosing to run his campaign, but the decision could also be in part thanks to the fact that Donald Trump has let his vitriol and bilious comments take aim at Apple on more than one occasion during this campaign.
Earlier in the year, Trump claimed that he would get Apple to “build their damn computers and things in this country”, referencing the fact that the richest company in the world, headquartered in California, currently has their manufacturing lines in Asia. Of course, other than trying to work up the crowd, Trump was able to offer absolutely no information about how he would achieve such a feat. The Presidential nominee has also attempted to persuade consumers to boycott all of Apple’s products because the company refused to aid the FBI in the San Bernardino shooting case.
Make sure you keep an eye on Donald Trump’s social media accounts; he’s unlikely to take this one without comment.
