Apple will reportedly announce a new premium subscription-based podcast service during its Spring Loaded event tomorrow. That’s according to a tweet by Vox’s Peter Kafka.
Kafka took to Twitter over the weekend to say that he expects Apple to announce the premium service, likely called Podcasts+.
This also backs up changes in recent iOS 14.5 betas that suggest new features are on the way in the future.
Apple has long been rumored to be working on a premium subscription service, with podcasts living behind a paywall and offering exclusive content. It’s likely that the service would also become part of the Apple One subscription bundle as well, although we don’t yet know how much Podcasts+ could cost as a standalone service.
Apple does already offer some of its own original podcasts based on Apple TV+ content, although they are all free right now. It’s possible these kinds of podcasts will be behind the Podcasts+ paywall in the future, however.
Steve Moser has also chimed in by backing Kafka’s claim.
It’s also notable that Apple is no longer accepting podcasts submissions through iTunes Connect. It’s thought that this is due to an impending change to the way Apple’s podcast library works, again pointing towards a new premium service.
