Apple will begin shipping products with min-LED displays, when the next iPad Pro is refreshed, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
According to a past and more recent research not picked up by MacRumors, Kuo believes that the number of companies now able to provide mini-LED technology has increased, allowing Apple to ramp up its efforts to bring the technology to market.
It’s now thought that the first device to make use of mini-LED technology will be a new iPad Pro, while there are multiple iPads and Macs already in development that make use of the display technology.
However, issues with yields could see mass production of the displays be lower than expected.
Apple’s mini LED dies will be mass-produced in 4Q20, but due to yield issues related to the production process of display module materials, the 4Q20 display shipments have been revised down by 50% to 300,000-400,000. We believe that the mini LED display in 4Q20 will be used for the new iPad Pro.
The benefits of mini-LED screens include a lower power usage, improved brightness, and better contrast and color reproduction. The displays will also be made thinner than current technology, allow for thinner notebooks and phones.
The increased competition among display manufacturers has seen Apple save money on its expected costs, allowing it to move forward with mini-LED products sooner than it had previously expected to.
