When Apple announced the Apple Watch Ultra it promised to launch a new app that would be specifically built with divers in mind. That app, Oceanic+, is now available for download.
Apple announced the new app via a Newsroom post, saying that it was created in collaboration with Huish Outdoors to enable “recreational scuba divers to take the watch they wear every day to previously unreachable depths.”
The app will help divers go to depths of 40 meters, or 130 feet.
Apple touts some of the specialist features that the Apple Watch Ultra and Oceanic+ have, including the ability to measure water temperature and see information about tides and more.
In the dive planner, users can set their surface time, their depth, and their gas, and Oceanic+ will calculate their No Deco (no-decompression) time — a metric used to determine a time limit for a diver at a certain depth. The planner also integrates dive conditions, including tides, water temperature, and even up-to-date information from the community, such as visibility and currents. Post-dive, users will see data — including GPS entry and exit locations — automatically pop up on Apple Watch Ultra, along with a summary of their dive profile. The summary on the Oceanic+ iPhone app provides additional information, including a map of entry and exit locations, as well as graphs of depth, temperature ascent rate, and no-decompression limit.
All of that and more is now available via the Oceanic+ app. You’ll need an Apple Watch Ultra to install it of course, and only the Apple Watch Ultra is certified to WR100 and EN 13319. The large 49mm display is just one example of what makes the Apple Watch Ultra unique, but the overall package is designed with diving and other extreme sports in mind.
The Apple Watch Ultra is available to buy now for $799 and only comes in one configuration with LTE built in.
