Bizarrely, this latest September media event held by Apple didn’t feature the iPhone as the main focus. That’s not great for some people but is actually wonderful news for others, such as passionate Apple Watch aficionados who were excited to see what the future of Apple’s smart wearable looked like.
And now we know!
We’ve been talking about Apple Watch Series 6 for a while now and had a very good feeling that it was going to feature heavily as part of today’s digital-only event. Still, it’s nice to have that confirmed by Apple and to also see the features, price, and release date for the hardware coming directly from the horse’s mouth.
Features
– New S6 SiP essentially brings a dual core CPU to the new wearable which happens to be based on the the A13 Bionic chip.
– Bloody Oxygen Level Tracking
Apple Watch Series 6 and watchOS 7 will work harmoniously together to let a wearer track their blood oxygen levels with the hope of potentially detecting serious illness earlier than before. The system will provide the wearer with notifications when levels are low as part of an early-warning system.
– Sleep Tracking
Rumored for some time, this feature sure took its time. That said, According to Apple, sleep tracking on the Series 6 will be extremely accurate thanks to a bunch of new sensors. This means that while the Series 5 will also be getting this feature as part of watchOS 7, the latest wearable from Apple will just do it slightly better.
– Real-Time Elevation
Going on a hike or climbing mountains? Apple Watch Series 6 now comes backing in in-built altimeter to give you a real-time reading of the height you’re at.
– U1 Ultrawideband
Apple first used this chip for the iPhone 11’s connectivity needs, but has not found a place on your wrist as well! This is a major upgrade for the Apple Watch, something that would have to be tested obviously when we get our hands on the watch.
– Family Setup
To start of this allows an iPhone user to pair watches for people who don’t actually have an iPhone, which are more than likely to be children. Of course for this feature to work, the watch needs to be the cellular model, but once done, you can set up location alerts, control who your kids can see and message through the Apple Watch, and more. There’s even a mode for school time to limit interaction with the watch, with further customization to help teachers make sure that the student is actually paying attention in class.
– New Watch faces
As expected, watchOS 7 on the new Series 6 brings in some cool new watch faces, the most interesting of them being the Memoji face, as well as custom artist face. Namely you have: GMT, Countup, Chronograph Pro, Typograph, ARt…, Memoji, Striples. Apple says it has allowed developers to create their own complications, but Watch Faces, not so much for now.
– New Colors
The new Series 6 will be available in Gold, Graphite, Blue, or a (PRODUCT)RED.
Apple Watch SE
Yes, as expected Apple has launched a more budget oriented wearable, called the Apple Watch SE. Retaining the Series 5 and Series 6 display and design elements, it appears to be quite the Series 5. Powered by the S5 SiP, the watch packs “the same accelerometer, gyroscope, and always-on altimeter as Apple Watch Series 6, and with the latest motion sensors and microphone, it offers robust health and safety capabilities including fall detection, Emergency SOS, international emergency calling, and the Noise app.”
All of this starting at $279 only. Perhaps what’s more cool about the Apple Watch SE is how, just like the Series 6, most of it was built out of recycled materials as shown by Apple.
Price
Pricing on the Apple Watch Series 6 starts at $399 for non-LTE aluminum 40mm Sport models.
- 40mm: Starting at $399 | $499 for GPS+Cellular
- 44mm: Starting at $429 | $529 for GPS+Cellular
Apple Watch SE price starts at $279 for the non-LTE model. Bear in mind that the exact size of the watch remains sketchy for now.

- 44mm: Starting at $309 | $409 for GPS+Cellular
Release Date
If you remove the price and the hardware out of the equation, the next mit aost important point on people’s minds is the release date of the new Apple Watch Series 6. So, when will it go on sale, and when you can you get your hands on the new Series 6 Apple Watch? Pre-orders are live right now with shipping beginning September 18th. Same goes for the Apple Watch SE as well.
