It’s fair to say that the Apple Watch has probably caused an uptick in the number of people seeking out medical attention following an alert of some sort, thanks to the way it monitors a user’s heart rate and rhythm. This is especially the case with the new Apple Watch Series 4 and its ECG functionality, and while the Apple Watch as a whole may be looked down on by some medical specialists, some are finding out about the benefits it offers, first-hand.
According to a new report by ABC 11, Fayetteville home health nurse Beth Stamps was visiting a patient when she noticed that her own heart rate was abnormally high thanks to an alert by her Apple Watch. According to Stamps, her heart rate was around 177 bpm and despite her attempts to lower it, she was not successful.
She also reported feeling as if she had just “finished a marathon,” which was clearly not the case. After emergency services were called, and following another couple of days of tests, it was confirmed that the nurse was suffering from supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), an issue caused by an improper electrical activity in the upper area of the heart.
Thankfully, Stamps is now following a medical regime to bring her ailment under control, and while she does say that she has experienced similar symptoms in the past, they have always subsided. However, thanks to the Apple Watch, it was decided that this time it was wise to seek attention.
Apple’s health initiatives via the Apple Watch should not be understated, and with CEO Tim Cook of the belief that the company’s work in the health arena will be its largest contribution ever, it’s difficult to disagree with him.
