Apple is working with UK tech company Rockley Photonics on hardware that could see the Apple Watch gain support for blood pressure and blood sugar monitoring.
Apple is listed as one of the company’s biggest customers and it is known to be working on new sensors that would be capable of tracking various aspects of the blood without the need for a needle.
It also makes sensors similar to those that already live on the back of an Apple Watch, although the new ones are much more sensitive.
According to a report by The Telegraph, the UK-based company also has offices in Silicon Valley and its relationship with Apple was made available in paperwork relating to its move to go public on the New York stock exchange.
The filings said that Apple accounted for the majority of its revenue in the last two years and that it has an ongoing “supply and development agreement” with the company under which it expects to continue to rely on Apple for most of its income.
The Apple Watch already measures blood oxygen levels as well as the wearer’s heart rate, but the addition of blood pressure and blood oxygen monitoring could help the wearable save even more lives than it already does.
