Apple Watch: 38mm vs 42mm Video Comparison

In case you were wondering which size of Apple Watch is right for you, we got you covered in a neat and detailed video walkthrough, comparing the 38mm and 42mm case sizes against one another.

The Apple Watch version which we’ll be comparing is the Sport model, which is available in 10 different options; white, blue, green, and pink sport bands with a silver aluminum case in both 38mm and 42mm case sizes. Along with those, there is also the 38mm and 42mm in a space gray aluminum case with a black sport band.

Apple Watch 38mm vs 42mm Comparison

Both 38mm and 42mm Sport models have the same hardware including the strengthened Ion-X glass, which is also found on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. On the right side, we have a Digital Crown for scrolling or zooming in / out which also doubles as a home button and a trigger for invoking Siri. Below the Digital Crown is the side button for quickly accessing favorite contacts, and to activate Apple Pay. On the left side, we have our speaker and microphone.

Bands:

Now when comparing the bands of the Sport models, both the 38mm and 42mm come packaged with 2 different size options. The 38mm Apple Watch Sport comes attached with the small/medium size band along with a medium/large band in the box. The 42mm does the opposite. You get a medium/large band already attached to your Apple Watch, and a small/medium band packaged in the box.

Dimensions:

You will notice the 38mm is quite small and I find this as an ideal size for women or those who have smaller sized wrists and thin fingers. In my opinion, after using the 38mm for about a week, I found it small when placed on my wrist, and unless you have thin fingers, the tap targets are hard to hit on such a small display. Looking at the 42mm Apple Watch Sport, it is not much bigger, but it does feel more fitting for my wrist. Tap targets are easier and works great most of the time on the larger display. When it comes to dimensions, the 38mm has a height of 38.6mm, width of 33.3mm, and depth of 10.5mm. The 42mm has a height of 42.0mm, width of 35.9mm, and depth of 10.5mm. You won’t find a difference in thickness, only the size of the display.
