Apple’s Vision Pro headset has been named 2024’s Innovation of the Year by Popular Science, recognizing it as a major step forward in augmented reality (AR) technology.
Popular Science highlights 50 of the best breakthroughs in science and tech every year, and the Vision Pro took the top spot this year. The publication called it a key moment in AR, showing what the future of immersive technology could look like.
So what makes the Vision Pro special? It has an incredible 23-million-pixel display, giving each eye more than 4K resolution. Cameras on the outside of the headset let it show your surroundings, mixing the real world with digital images. Instead of using controllers or buttons, you control it with hand gestures, eye movements, and your voice, making it feel natural and futuristic. Popular Science said these features make the headset “different, important, and honestly pretty amazing.”
However, there are some drawbacks. The $3,500 price tag is extremely high, and the “eye display” on the outside of the headset has received mixed reactions. Even so, the Vision Pro’s potential is what stands out.
Apple is clearly building a bigger plan for AR, with iPhones now able to shoot special videos for the headset and apps being designed for AR experiences. A more affordable version in the future could make it a true game-changer.
Other cool tech on Popular Science’s list includes the Oura Ring 4, Sony A9 III camera, Boox Palma e-ink phone, and LG Signature OLED T TV.
The Vision Pro shows what’s possible in AR, and it might just change how we interact with technology in the future.
