Apple released macOS Big Sur to the public yesterday and it’s now also updated a ton of apps to get them ready for the new design language. It also added support for macOS Big Sur running on Apple silicon, too.
With new M1-powered machines set to be delivered to homes next week, that part was pretty important.
The new interface changes also extend to new icons to more closely match the language Apple is suing across its apps. The whole suite of iWork apps including Pages, Numbers, and Keynote have all been updated with new icons.
Apple also updated its pro-level apps with Final Cut Pro X and Logic Pro X both getting some new love. They’re now designed to work on Macs running Apple silicon, allowing them to take advantage of the extra power and Neural Engine offered.
Final Cut Pro X has the following release notes:
- Improved performance and efficiency on Mac computers with Apple silicon
- Accelerated machine learning analysis for Smart Conform using the Apple Neural Engine on Mac computers with Apple silicon
- Option to create a copy of your library and automatically transcode media to ProRes Proxy or H.264 at various resolutions
It’s a similar story for Logic Pro X, too.
- Improved performance and efficiency on Mac computers with Apple silicon
- Adds the ability to control Step Sequencer using Logic Remote on your iPad or iPhone to create beats, bass lines, and melodic parts
- Supports all Novation Launchpad controllers
- Stability and performance improvements
Apple has also changed the icon for GarageBand on the Mac App Store.
All of these updates are available for download from the App Store now.
