Apple announced a new Apple TV 4K yesterday, adding support for a number of things not least HDR at high frame rates.
While everyone was also keen on the newly announced Apple Siri Remote, one other feature was being overlooked – the ability to use an iPhone to calibrate the Apple TV’s color balance. And it turns out that you don’t actually need to buy a new Apple TV 4K to use it, either.
As noted by a number of people, Apple’s press release confirms that people will be able to use the same calibration feature with their existing Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K hardware once iOS 14.5 and tvOS 14.5 ship next week.
The feature will allow users to take advantage of their iPhone’s camera to tell whether their Apple TV and television are accurately reproducing colors, or not. The result will be an improved image quality overall.
The Apple TV 4K refresh also brings with it a redesigned Apple Siri Remote as well as an Apple A12 Bionic processor, allowing for faster framerates in games, not to mention the aforementioned support for HDR at a higher frame rate, too.
MacRumors gives us a look into how the feature actually works:
The refreshed Apple TV 4K will go up for pre-order on April 30, shipping in the second half of May.
