Apple CEO Tim Cook may have confirmed yesterday that the next generation Apple TV will go on sale this coming Monday, but there is still plenty of life in the existing model with three new channels being added to its content lineup. As of right now, CBS, NBC and M2M are available via the Apple TV.
While the new Apple TV brings with it an App Store that works in much the same was as the iOS and Mac equivalents, the older Apple TVs still need Apple to push new channel apps to them and that’s exactly what happened today. The three new channels will be automatically available to those in markets that are able to take advantage of them, with no user input required.
The CBS app allows viewers to subscribe to a $5.99 on-demand catalog of CBS shows, with viewers in some markets even able to watch live TV via the app. CBS already has Sports and News apps available on the Apple TV and the new app brings shows to the platform for the first time. People wanting to sign up can get a free 1-week trial, too.
NBC’s new app also provides on-demand viewing of some of the biggest shows around, including The Blacklist and The Late Show with Jimmy Fallon. You’ll need to sign in using your provider’s log-in details, though, so no free content here.
The lesser-known M2M, or Made 2 Measure is a channel dedicated to fashion. Free to view with ads supporting it, the channel will be popular amongst those with a keen eye for fashion, but it’s unlikely to get the pulse racing for many. Regardless, choice is always good, and we’re pleased to see M2M make an appearance on the Apple TV.
All of the attention right now, though, is rightfully on the new Apple TV 4, and what developers will do with it come next week. We can’t wait to see what great apps and games pop up on the App Store.
