Apple has released a new ad via its Apple Singapore YouTube channel with the company touting the benefits of Face ID over the Touch ID biometrics that older iPhones use.
In the ad, we see a man asleep in a deckchair while notifications rain in on his blue iPhone XR. Clearly not keen to get up, he simply raises his chair and opens his eyes to glance at the iPhone, unlocking it in the process. After seeing the notifications, he loses his eyes and goes back to his nap with the tag line “Face ID. Even easier and more secure than Touch ID” appearing on-screen.
While Apple has shown Face ID off in advertising materials before, this is one of the very rare occasions where it has also put a downer on some of its own technology in the process. Touch ID was the best in biometric security for years and continues to ship on iPad and iPod touch devices today. The thought of Apple outing it as less secure than Face ID is an odd one, even though factually correct.
Apple introduced Face ID with the iPhone X in 2017 and added it to the iPad Pro line in 2018. The iPhone and iPad Pro are the only lines to receive Face ID to date, with rumors that it would be part of iMac and iPod touch refreshes so far wide of the mark.
Apple is likely to announce new iPhones this September, with Face ID front and center once again.
