Apple’s iPhone launch days are always busy, and if you’ve ever previously queued for the latest device on the very first morning, you’ll know that it can be a long, tedious wait. Sure, the system whereby staff hand out paper cards, detailing the exact configuration of the iPhone you require is efficient, since it means you’re not wasting time if the specific handset you want has sold out, but given the technology at Apple’s disposal, the process does seem rather antiquated. This is why, on iPhone 6 launch day, Apple will be rolling out an entirely new, digital queuing system, a revamp of the old model that is more precise and flexible for customers.
Traditionally, each device in stock has a paper card, and once these are dished out to the more prompt customers, those queuing behind the card holders can leave without waiting for hours on end. But with the iPhone 6 being a device of many firsts, the new Reservation Pass system – according to 9to5Mac – will see tickets sent out to customers digitally via SMS or email, and will sync with stock levels in real time. With Reservation Passes, early adopters will be able to leave the queue once they’ve made their selection, and head back up to the Apple Retail Store later on in the day to pick up their device.
It’s a much-needed upgrade of the carded system, and not only means that dedicated fans won’t have to queue for hours on end once they’ve obtained a virtual paper card, but also that passers-by won’t be bombarded by hordes of early adopters when trying to go about their daily business.
Previously, leaving the queue with a paper card was a possibility, but given that paper is easier to lose track of than a live-updating digital system, there was always an element of risk attached to doing so.
The new system works in the favor of Apple and customers alike, and provided there are no major issues – technology does have a habit of throwing up unexpected issues at the worst possible times – the whole first-day rush should be less cumbersome and stressful.
The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will go on general sale next week on Friday, September 19th.
