The annual Worldwide Developers Conference usually offers an insight into software improvements Apple has been making to its product line-ups, and this year, we’re once again expecting WWDC to showcase an updated iOS 8 and OS X 10.10. Apparently, though, we could also be in for some new hardware, but precisely what we’re going to be getting remains an unfortunate mystery.
Mark Gurman of 9to5Mac cites unspecified sources in speculating that Apple may have a new piece of hardware up its sleeve, and while this could point to one of a number of things, we’re certainly hoping it’ll be both new and exciting.
CEO Tim Cook already alluded to several “new product categories” for 2014, although given how reports have also pointed to Q3 as a potential release bracket for a bunch of new devices, we perhaps didn’t anticipate that anything major would manifest itself at WWDC.
The 9to5Mac report suggests that the long-awaited MacBook Air with Retina display is the “most likely” WWDC announcement, and although this isn’t perhaps as significant as, say, the so-called “iWatch,” for example, it has been a long time in coming.
Speaking of Apple’s first delve into the emerging world of wearables, it is widely suspected that the fruit company will finally cave and offer some competition to the Pebble, Samsung Gear range, and the many other wrist-worn gizmos releasing under the Android Wear umbrella. Expected to tie heavily in with iOS 8’s “Healthbook” suite, a WWDC announcement of the iWatch would be a tad surprising given the lack of any substantial leaks to this point, but given how good Apple has been at keeping secrets in the past, we wouldn’t completely disregard this possibility.
Another theory, of course, could be a long-awaited upgrade on the third-gen Apple TV. On various occasions, we’ve heard that Apple is planning on adding gaming support complete with MFi controller capabilities, but as yet, none of this has reached fruition.
Whatever the case, we now know that Tim Cook will be taking to the stage at 10am on June 2nd at the Moscone Center, at which point, all will be revealed.
