Apple has changed the way it deals with faulty batteries in the sixth-generation iPad mini, according to reports.
While people would previously have had their entire iPad mini swapped out as part of the repair, Apple is now only switching out the batteries.
MacRumors reports that the change in policy is now rolling out, with Apple Stores and other repair centers told to only swap out the battery, giving users their old iPad mini back.
Currently, if an iPad customer wants to get their battery replaced, Apple Stores, authorized service providers, and repair centers will give those customers a replacement device instead of simply swapping out the battery in their original iPad. Starting today for repair centers, iPad mini 6 customers, if eligible, will be able to get only their battery replaced without needing to be given a whole unit replacement (WUR).
The report notes that while this only appears to apply to the sixth-gen iPad mini right now, it’s possible that we could see other iPads follow suit over time. It’s also worth noting that this move means those who would previously have been given a new iPad mini will now have to live with any cracks and scratches that were previously part of their existing device.
That’s obviously bad news for anyone who would previously have benefited from Apple’s decision to hand out new tablets instead of switching out batteries.
