The iPhone 6 has been one of the most talked-about releases of this calendar year in the world of tech, and although we’ve long since suspected that September will be the month of its long-awaited announcement, we may now have a firm date. We’ve had plenty of speculation pertaining to the release date, with sources having already pointed to Friday 19th or Friday 26th, but for the first time, a reliable source has suggested a date for the announcement event, which will apparently be held on September 9th.
Re/code’s John Paczkowski takes the credit for this particular scoop, and although this date cannot be confirmed, it makes sense given past releases.
After the iPhone 5s’s perceivably rudimentary upgrade, Apple is expected to really up the ante this time around, with a redesigned handset borrowing much of its design traits from the iPad Air and iPod touch. Moreover, the Cupertino-based company is finally expected to increase the amount of display real estate available, with a 4.7-inch variant said to be accompanied by a 5.5-inch “phablet” model.
Under the hood, we’re anticipating an enhanced, Apple A8 processor, improved camera, and, if some reports are to be believed, Apple may also indulge in NFC. Having stood by and looked on as Android vendors planted NFC into their smartphones as a matter of standard procedure, the Mac maker has remained typically cautious, but given how many firsts look set to be bundled into the iPhone 6, we wouldn’t be too shocked if this piece of hardware was also forthcoming.
From what we’ve gathered, the larger of the next-gen iPhones may be subject to delay, and although Paczkowski seems well informed of the September 9th announcement, it remains unclear whether the more sizeable option will also be unveiled. Considering earlier reports once more, it seems probable that both will be showcased on the same date, with availability of the 4.7-inch model being a week or two on from the event, but at this point, it’s mere speculation.
With just one month to go, it might not be long before we finally get to see the iPhone 6 in all of its glory, and after an abundance of mock-ups, leaked snaps and conflicting reports, it’ll be something of a relief.
