Apple is reportedly readying an expansion into the world of smart home accessories, with the recent release of a new HomePod thought to be just the start.
A new report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claims that Apple is working on a “slate of devices” that will continue its push into the smart home, with one of those thought to be a new iPad-like product.
Gurman says that the device is like a low-end iPad that can be used for things like video calls using FaceTime and controlling smart home accessories.
The push into smart displays will start with a tablet product — essentially a low-end iPad — that can control things like thermostats and lights, show video and handle FaceTime chats, people with knowledge of the plans said. The product could be mounted on walls or elsewhere using magnetic fasteners, positioning it as more of a home gadget than a regular iPad.
That sounds similar to existing products from both Google and Amazon, and is also the way some people use their existing iPads when connected to a stand or charger.
The same report also claims that Apple is working on a refreshed Apple TV with an upgraded processor but using the same design as the current model. It’s expected to ship in the first half of 2024, although Apple’s plans could change between now and that happening.
