Apple Tests And Passes Two Foldable iPhone Prototypes [Report]

A new report has shed light on the prospects of a foldable iPhone materializing in the nearby future, as we’re told that two prototype models have passed durability tests, internally.

The report comes in from Economic Daily News, which tells us that the tests for these folding mechanisms were conducted at the Foxconn factory in Shenzhen, China.

Apple’s said to be working on two types of foldable phones here, one with a dual-screen, and one that is more of a traditional clamshell design. We have already seen rumors of a dual-screen model, one which essentially turns the iPhone into a mini iPad of sorts.

The clamshell design is more likely to appeal to most consumers, and would be pretty similar to the Galaxy Z Fold, and the Moto RAZR. However, it is likely that Apple will choose a different more robust hinge design here. There have already been rumors about Apple having gotten their hands on a bunch of flexible displays from Samsung for testing purposes.

With the tests for the prototypes being all about durability and robustness, it is likely that the innards were minimal at best or not indicative of the final hardware at least.

What is clear though, is that the buzz around a foldable phone from Apple is beginning to pick up, and with reports coming in from iPhone manufacturers and suppliers, there just might be some weight behind this latest bit of information.
