If you have a broken Apple Watch Series 3 and take it in for repair, you might strike lucky and get an Apple Watch Series 4 in return. That’s the situation after Apple informed its store staff to substitute some Apple Watch Series 3 repairs with the newer device.
Apple distributed a note to its Apple Store staff as well as Apple Authorized Service Providers according to a new report by 9to5Mac. Due to constraints in the supply of the older model, the Apple Watch Series 3 Stainless Steel (GPS + Cellular) will instead be swapped out with Apple Watch Series 4, Stainless Steel (GPS + Cellular), according to the report.
Apple appears to be running low on inventory for Apple Watch Series 3 repairs as the company informed store staff today that it will substitute some Series 3 repairs with the newer Apple Watch Series 4. Apple announced the change in an internal memo that was delivered to Apple Store repair staff and Apple’s Authorized Service Providers, according to sources briefed on the update.
The note Apple sent out was provided to all of its stores and service providers around the globe, although it wasn’t made clear whether this is a temporary supply issue or one that will see this become an ongoing situation.
Apple has fallen into similar situations previously, offering Apple Watch Series 2 wearables to those with faulty Apple Watch Series 1 devices earlier this year. Apple clearly has issues keeping older stock around, especially in some versions of its wearables that may not see the same sell-through as more popular products.
It’s, of course, important that this isn’t something that people try to take advantage of, and if you were to give that a shot, there’s no guarantee that the outcome will be in your favor. If, however, you do have a legitimately faulty Apple Watch Series 3 in Stainless Steel with GPS and cellular connectivity, this might be the time to get it repaired.
