Apple Sets A Domestic Record, Shipping 15 Million iPhones In The US During Q2 2020

Things might have been turbulent this year but that hasn’t stopped Apple from managing to set a new domestic record in terms of the number of iPhones that it shipped through the United States. According to numbers collected by Canalys, Apple shifted around 15 million units during Q2 2020.

One of the big winners was the iPhone 11, with it managing to ship 15% more than the device that it replaced, the iPhone XR. The iPhone SE did similarly well, growing iPhone’s quarterly market share to a massive 47%.

As a whole, Apple reportedly shipped 10% more iPhones than the same quarter in 2019, a result that’s particularly impressive given everything that 2020 has thrown at us.

With all of Apple’s 2020 iPhones set to ship with 5G capability, it’s interesting to read that 5G adoption was low for the quarter. However, that’s likely to change once the iPhone enters the fray.

As the coronavirus pandemic forced consumers to stay at home, 5G adoption in the U.S. failed to take off. Store closures and virus fears limited interaction with demonstration models, tight consumer budgets further constrained spending power, and with scarce 5G network coverage in American suburbia, consumers saw plenty of reasons to buy a 4G device instead,” Canalys Analyst Vincent Thielke said. “Despite the lackluster 5G roll-out so far, strong carrier marketing in coming quarters will be instrumental in catalyzing a multi-year transition period from LTE to 5G.

Apple will announce four new 5G iPhones this year, although there is some debate as to when that will happen. We’d expect both iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro models to be out the door before the end of October, at least.
