Apple is again rumored to be limiting the speed at which new iPhone 15 Pro models can charge depending on how which cable is used.
Apple is set to use USB-C on the iPhone 15 lineup rather than Lightning, with the phones being announced this September.
Now analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that Apple will limit faster charging to MFi-certified cables. What’s more, only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will have the faster data transfer speeds, too.
I believe Apple will optimize the fast charging performance of MFi-certified chargers for the iPhone 15. Among Apple’s chargers, the 20W USB-C model is the most cost-effective choice for iPhone users, resulting in strong replacement demand for 20W USB-C chargers.
It’s thought that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will still transfer data at USB 2.0 speeds despite having a USB-C connector.
By contrast, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are both likely to offer USB 3.2 transfer speeds instead as was first rumored in late 2022.
Faster charging and transfer speeds are two things that people had expected to see the new iPhones benefit from once they are announced this year. But it looks like there will be limitations based on which iPhone the user buys and whether their cable has been blessed by Apple or not.
