Apple has today released the second beta of iOS 16.6 and iPadOS 16.6 to developers, giving them another chance to put the updates through their paces ahead of an official release to the public.
While this round of releases is only available to developers, those on the public beta program can likely expect to get their hands on them within a day or so assuming no big issues are discovered between now and then.
Registered developers can now download the updated beta by choosing the Beta Updates option in the Software Update area of the Settings app. You’ll need to be signed into an Apple ID that is linked to a developer account, however.
The iOS 16.6 and iPadOS 16.6 updates aren’t expected to bring huge changes to the iPhone and iPad, but they do appear to be getting things ready for iMessage Contact Key Verification. That feature will allow Apple device owners to confirm that the people they are sending and receiving messages with are who they claim to be.
However, iMessage Contact Key Verification isn’t a feature that most people will need or use and is instead aimed at journalists and officials who could find themselves on the receiving end of security threats.
There’s currently no indication of when the feature will actually go live, but it’s expected before the end of 2023 which suggests it might not be all that far away.
