Apple Reportedly Working On A New Augmented Reality App For iOS 14

Apple is expected to announce iOS 14 at WWDC this June with the update being made available to users this coming September if the usual release cadence is to be followed. We’re still three months away from the first developer betas being made available, but 9to5Mac has been able to get hold of the update in some form. And it seems that it’s going to include a new augmented reality app.

While there’s little known about the app at the moment, 9to5Mac was able to conclude that the app would work on iPhones and iPads, and that Apple has been testing it with its own Apple Stores as well as Starbucks.

It’s thought that we can expect the app to scan a QR code and then be shown more information about whatever they’re stood in front of. In an Apple Store that could be a new product, or in Starbucks it could be nutritional information about a new drink. Whatever the use case, it’ll make heavy use of augmented reality.

It’s thought that there will be some form of API to open this up to developers, although that is obviously unconfirmed at this point. The app as a whole could get canned ahead of WWDC, and even if it doesn’t there’s no guarantee that it will survive the beta process.

We also don’t know whether the new app would work with all existing iPhones, or if it would be exclusive to the 2020 iPhone lineup.

All eyes are on WWDC for now.
