Apple is reportedly getting ready to change the technology used in the Apple Watch Ultra’s display while also offering a new, cheaper version of its AirPods for those on a tighter budget.
Starting with the Apple Watch Ultra, analyst Jeff Pu of Haitong International Securities believes that Apple will switch to micro-LED technology in 2024.
Pu made the claim in a research note seen by MacRumors which also suggests a boost in display size.
The current Apple Watch Ultra comes with a 1.92-inch OLED display, but Pu expects the 2024 Apple Watch Ultra to move to a new, larger 2.1-inch micro-LED display instead. That would potentially allow for a brighter display, something that would be beneficial when using the Apple Watch Ultra in bright sunlight.
Pu also believes that Apple is working on AirPods Lite, a budget-friendly version of the AirPods wireless earbuds. However, it isn’t clear what Apple would do to reduce the price, with the current AirPods 2 costing $129. It’s thought that a sub-$99 asking price would be required, although Pu didn’t go into details about how that might be achieved.
It’s notable that Pu has a spotty track record, however, and is often found repeating information gleaned from other analysts and leakers, so this latest report should absolutely be taken with a pinch of salt unless more information becomes available.
