Apple plans to increase its use of OLED technology moving into the next few years, with as many as nine new models moving over to new displays by 2027.
That’s according to a report by Taiwan’s ET News, which says that there are multiple new tablets getting OLED technology. The rumors are already rife that Apple will announce new iPad Pros as soon as 2024, but that appears to just be the start.
Apple will reportedly also move the iPad mini over to 2026 with the iPad Air also getting an OLED display in the same year. As part of the change, the iPad mini is also expected to get a new, larger display size of around 8.7 inches according to reports.
Apple is expected to launch a new, larger 12.9-inch iPad Air in 2024 and it’s now reported that while that tablet will have an LCD screen, 2029 will see it make the move away from that and towards a new OLED panel.
Unfortunately, while the iPad Air and iPad mini are both going to gain a new OLED display each, it isn’t thought that they will support a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate which means that will remain exclusive to the iPad Pro.
As for Apple’s laptop lineup, a 16-inch MacBook Pro is expected to launch with an OLED display in 2025 while the 14-inch model will follow suit a year later. The 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air laptops are also expected to switch to OLED displays in 2026.
