Apple has managed to cause an absolute storm with the array of announcements that have emanated from the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium during the most recent media event, and it’s not over yet. As part of the Apple TV 4 with tvOS announcement the Cupertino-based giant has now also released the first beta of the new underlying tvOS firmware that will power the set-top box. Perhaps less exciting, but still notable, the company has also seeded the final OS X El Capitan Golden Master (GM) seed to registered developers.
If you’ve never heard of tvOS, and have no idea what it is or what it represents, then don’t feel bad. The latest edition to the Apple TV range summons its power from the newly introduced platform, which is built on top of and in turn derives its abilities from iOS. Those registered at Apple Developer Program are able to get involved right now by creating tvOS apps using the tvOS SDK.
Apple is hoping that the launch of the initial beta of tvOS and the accompanying Apple TV SDK will give developers a kick start in creating connected and immersive apps for the new set-top-box prior to its launch.
In addition to the tvOS SDK, developers will be able to fully utilize the powerful CPU/GPU capabilities of the new ATV hardware in the form of the A8 chip, as well as the connected display, and the accompanying new Apple TV remote with its glass-based touch surface, Siri and motion gestures. We’re definitely looking forward to getting a glimpse of what those developers will be creating as the ATV 4 goes mainstream.
Those same developers are now also able to access the final Golden Master (GM) version of the OS X El Capitan that has been in development for a number of months. Following on the from the latest beta 8 that was released back in late August, Apple has now provided immediate access to the GM, which should provide developers with a final opportunity to test out their own apps and software prior to it actually going live on MacBooks and iMacs around the globe as a free update via the App Store.
As always, both the initial beta of tvOS and the OS X El Capitan GM are available to download from Apple Developer website.
