Owners of the latest USB-C AirPods Max wireless headphones have a new firmware update after version 7E99 was released yesterday.
The new update replaces the previous 7A291 firmware and brings with it two new features alongside the release of iOS 18.4.
The new features were previously previewed by Apple and add support for both lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio to the USB-C version of the AirPods Max. The former means that support 24-bit 48 kHz lossless audio can be enjoyed when using a USB-C cable, but you’ll need to buy the cable separately.
The new ultra-low latency feature will make AirPods Max a better option for music creators, gamers, and streamers who need to be sure that their headphones are as reactive and accurate as possible. You’ll need to be running iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, or macOS Sequoia 15.4 to enjoy the new features, and the new firmware will be automatically installed on compatible headphones.
For that to happen, the AirPods Max need to be within Bluetooth range of an iPhone, iPad, or Mac while also plugged into power. There is no way to manually initiate the update, unfortunately, and it can take up to 30 minutes for it to complete the process. You can check which firmware your AirPods Max are currently running by heading into the Bluetooth settings on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac and selecting them.
