Apple has today released the third iOS 17.3 and iPadOS 17.3 betas to developers, allowing them to download and install the updates on their test iPhones and iPads.
Those who are registered developers can now download the new software updates via the Settings app on their devices so long as they are signed into the Apple ID that is associated with their developer account.
This new third release comes a week after Apple released, and then pulled, the second beta. That beta caused some iPhones to become stuck in a bootloop and it appears that Apple ahs now decided to ship that version entirely and move onto the third beta.
In terms of changes, the iOS 17.3 update will bring Stolen Device Protection to the iPhone. It’s a feature designed to help ensure that private information is protected even should someone steal an iPhone and the associated passcode. Once enabled, a Face ID or Touch ID authentication will be required to access some parts of the system, including iCloud Keychain and more.
Another new feature will be support for collaborative playlists, something that was previously expected to arrive as part of iOS 17.2 but was ultimately delayed.
As ever, we would only suggest that people install these iOS 17.3 and iPadOS 17.3 betas on their iPhones and iPads if they are test devices and not mission-critical.
Last weeks’ issue highlights that betas can and do cause problems and they can be avoided by only installing betas on devices that you don’t need to use every day.
