Apple has today released the second iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5 betas for developers. The new betas arrive two weeks after the last ones and will likely be joined by a public beta release within a matter of days.
The new updates can both be downloaded by those who are registered Apple developers and are signed into their developer Apple IDs.
Those who have the developer profile installed will also be able to download these updates, but those profiles will be deprecated in a future release.
In terms of what’s new, the iOS 16.5 release added a new Sports tab to the Apple News app while also making it possible to use Siri to begin a screen recording. It isn’t currently known whether Apple has made any sweeping changes to the software in this latest beta, but it isn’t expected that there will be big new features in this release.
Apple will likely release the final version of iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5 to the public within the next few weeks and this will likely be the last release before Apple announces iOS 17 at the WWDC23 event in June.
That iOS 17 update will go through its own beta program before being released globally in September, assuming Apple follows its usual release timeline this year. We can also expect iOS 17 to be the software that ships on the iPhone 15 around the same time.
