Apple’s move towards making iCloud Keychain available to users of Windows PCs continues to gather pace – so much so that the company managed to release it to the world too early.
After an iCloud Keychain Chrome extension late last week, it now appears that it has been removed. Or, at least, the iCloud for Windows update version 12 has.
The story started when iCloud for Windows 12 was released with notes that suggested that iCloud Keychain was coming to Windows via a Chrome extension. That extension landed on Friday.
iCloud Passwords allows you to use the same strong Safari passwords you create on your Apple device, with Chrome on Windows.
However, as 9to5Google points out, the iCloud for Windows 12 update has now been removed from the Microsoft Store, suggesting things all went ahead a little too quickly for the folk in Cupertino.
According to user reports, Apple pulled version 12.0 of iCloud for Windows — even though the release notes still mention the new passwords feature — from the Microsoft Store. The Chrome extension currently works for those that updated to 12.0 last week. Apple looks to have launched too early and doesn’t have all the components in place.
It’s obvious that iCloud Keychain syncing support is coming to Chrome on Windows eventually, even if it isn’t quite ready for the limelight just yet. But the arrival of the password syncing feature on Windows is a big deal, especially for those who haven’t gone all-in on iCloud Keychain due to its lack of cross-platform support.
