Something that doesn’t happen very often is Apple reducing prices, and that too on new products, so today is very much an oddity seeing as the company has not only slashed the prices of its USB-C accessories, but also the recently-announced 4K and 5K displays made in partnership with LG.
Kicking things off with the accessories, Apple has reduced the prices of all of its USB-C dongles by anywhere from $6 to $20 depending on the product in question, with the company claiming that the move is one designed to help 2016 MacBook Pro early adopters swallow the cost of having to buy additional accessories.
Third-party adapters such as SanDisk’s USB-C SD card reader have also seen price reductions, with the aforementioned accessory experiencing a $20 cut to the more reasonable $29.
Perhaps more exciting, however, is the price drop now associated with the recently-announced LG 4K and 5K UltraFine monitors. Both were announced alongside the new 2016 MacBook Pros, with suitably high prices. Now, though, both carry asking prices that are much, much more reasonable.
The LG UltraFine 5K Display now has a $974 price tag, which is $325 less than its original $1,299.95 asking price while the 4K variant has received a $175 cut, which brings its price down from $699.95 to $524.
No, neither are cheap displays, but they are instead looking likely to be excellent monitors, and that’s where your money goes. Quality.
As for USB Type-C adapters, the following cuts are now in effect across both online and store retail outlets.
- USB-C to USB-A adapter: from $19 to $9
- Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter: from $49 to $29
- USB-C to Lightning cable (1 meter): from $25 to $19
- USB-C to Lightning cable (2 meters): from $35 to $29
- USB-C VGA Multiport adapter: from $69 to $49
- USB-C Digital AV Multiport adapter: from $69 to $49
For those who have already bought these, Apple will provide a refund for price difference. For those whose orders are still pending, Apple will add in the required price drop before charging.
This rare price-cut from Apple comes following serious criticism which the company received on its new MacBook Pro which drops legacy ports such as USB-A, Thunderbolt 2, SD card slot, MagSafe etc. in favor of USB-C equipped Thunderbolt 3 ports.
