Apple last week confirmed that it was recalling a number of 2015-2017 15-inch MacBook Pro notebooks, replacing defective batteries as required.
The company said that it would do so free of charge despite devices being out of warranty with the computers potentially at risk of overheating. It also said that they may “pose a fire safety risk.” Apple said that it would affect a small number of devices and now we have an idea of just how accurate that was.
That’s because the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, or CPSC, has now said that Apple received 26 reports of batteries that overheated with five of those causing minor burns. One report included smoke inhalation while a further 17 caused damage to nearby property.
That doesn’t sound great at all.
There are around 432,000 MacBook Pro computers that may be impacted by this issue in the United States with an additional 26,000 in Canada according to a recall announcement from the CPSC and Health Canada.
As a precaution Apple has told users of affected machines to stop using them and to contact it to get the wheels in motion for a replacement. However it’s important to note that not all Macs are affected and that it’s only those that have 15-inch displays and are identified as “Mid 2015” in the About This Mac window. That window can be found by clicking the Apple logo in the Mac’s menu bar and then clicking “About This Mac.”
No other MacBooks of any other designation or screen size are part of this recall.
