Apple is not above having problems relating to batteries, as the iPhone battery situation that blew up late last year shows, and now it is going so far as issuing a recall of sorts with relation to the MacBook Pro.
According to Apple, a small number of notebooks may experience issues such as batteries that swell, something that is obviously not a great thing to have happen to a computer.
The problem only impacts 13-inch non-Touch Bar MacBook Pros manufactured between October 2016 and October 2017 and if anyone has a device they want to check then they can do so by heading on over to this page on Apple’s website and providing their computer’s serial number. If your MacBook Pro is one of those affected, then you can take it into an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider and have the battery replaced free of charge, and anyone who is unable to do that can also mail their computer off.
Apple has determined that, in a limited number of 13-inch MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar) units, a component may fail causing the built-in battery to expand. This is not a safety issue and Apple will replace eligible batteries, free of charge. Affected units were manufactured between October 2016 and October 2017…
Apple also notes that it will not be extending the standard warranty coverage of any devices, but if anyone has already paid for a battery replacement on one of the affected computers, then they can contact the company in order to arrange a refund.
The program will run for five years from the original release of the non-Touch Bar 13-inch MacBook Pro, so even if you don’t go through the motions of having the battery replaced now, you’re good for a while yet.
