Apple No Longer Charges $99 Data Migration Fee On New Mac Purchase Or Repair

Apple has always offered users the option of having all of their data migrated to a new Mac when they either buy one, or have to pick one up as part of a warranty replacement.

Historically there has been a $99 fee associated with that, but starting last week, that fee is no longer payable.

The news comes after TidBITS heard about the change in policy after a reader was able to get the confirmation from an Apple Store Operations Specialist.

Beginning April 2, there will be no cost for Data Migrations with the purchase of a new Mac or Data Transfers with a repair.

Apple has always made a big deal about helping new users get up and running when they by a new Mac, but that did involve those buyers adding an additional $99 charge to their already costly orders. The charge was even more upsetting if the whole thing was related to a warranty replacement because, after all, why should people pay to move their data to a new Mac after their old one failed?

Thankfully Apple is no longer charging the $99 fee, so if you find yourself in an Apple Store with a new Mac and want to get your data to where it needs to be, it won’t cost you a penny extra. That’s great news, and frankly is something a company with Apple’s cash reserves should probably have been doing before now.

We do wonder if more people will take Apple up on the offer of migrating data now that the process is free, though. We all know how Apple Stores can be overburdened at the best of times.
