Apple News Now Remembers Your Reading Position In iOS 13.6

Apple released iOS 13.6 to developers this week and they’ve been noticing a few changes that will be of interest to plenty of people. The first of those was the new ability to control when a device automatically downloads an iOS update and another was a new Symptoms section within the Health app.

Now that’s yet another change, this one coming to the News app.

According to those running the latest iOS 13.6 beta 2 release, the News app will remember where you were up to when reading an article. That means that you’ll automatically be taken to the same spot the next time you open that particular article.

As MacRumors notes, things aren’t immediate, though.

As noted on the MacRumors forums, it takes about thirty seconds for the ‌Apple News‌ app to register and save your position in an article before it’s safe to exit out. This isn’t a feature that’s needed for short articles that you read right away, but for longer content, such as ‌Apple News‌+ magazine articles, it’s a welcome change.

We’ve already seen code discovered in iOS 13.5.5 beta 1 pointing audio support for Apple News+, and is expected to make it into the final release of iOS 13.6.

With iOS 13.6 being a beta, we’re hopeful that things will speed up in future updates. We’d definitely rather not have to wait that long before the app registers where we are in an article. But hey, we’ll take it if that’s the only option on the table!

Apple is expected to release iOS 13.6 to developers shortly, likely during or before WWDC on June 22.
