We’ve been expecting Apple to offer its own magazine subscription service for a long time now, going all the way back to its acquisition of Texture, a company that specialized in exactly that. In the middle of 2018, it was reported by Bloomberg that such a subscription was in the works, followed by another report by The Information that Apple was considering linking the service in with TV shows and music, perhaps as part of an expected Apple Music service.
Now, with iOS 12.2 in beta form, we’re starting to learn more about what the magazine subscription will look like.
Following the arrival of iOS 12.2 beta 1, we’ve been hearing more and more about features that are on their way to iPhone and iPad. One of those is the new magazine subscription service, with 9to5Mac able to access the landing page for it. According to their report, the name of the service will simply be “Apple News Magazines,” and it will link to users’ Apple IDs in the same way that Apple Music does.
The report also notes that the landing page mentions a “bundle subscription,” which may suggest that Apple Music and the company’s upcoming TV streaming service could all be bundled together with the magazine subscription at some point.
This is the first beta release of iOS 12.2, so things are liable to change, but the fact that this feature is now starting to make an appearance suggests that it isn’t too far off being announced officially.
Could that happen at the same time Apple finally takes the wraps off of its TV streaming service? Let’s hope so.
