Apple finally added wireless charging capabilities to the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and the upcoming iPhone X and that means that there are a huge number of wireless chargers out there that will work with those smartphones thanks to their adherence to the Qi standard.
That also means that the new iPhones will charge wirelessly when placed in some cars thanks to the inclusion of Qi-compatible charging mats built into them. But which cars are those? Well, we now have official word from Apple in this regard.
Well, we are glad you asked cause we now have official word from Apple itself in this regard. The company has posted a support document to its website that outlines exactly which cars will charge iPhones without the need for any cables. According to the company, the wireless chargers built into latest 2017 and 2018 model cars made by the following ten manufacturers should charge the new iPhones just fine:
- Audi
- BMW
- Chrysler
- Ford
- Honda
- Mercedes-Benz
- PSA
- Toyota
- Volkswagen
- Volvo
However, things may get a little dicy when the iPhone 8 Plus is used thanks to its sheer size. Apple is keen to remind users that if the iPhone 8 Plus is too large for the car in question, it will not be able to take advantage of wireless charging capabilities regardless of the model of car being used.
Some automotive wireless chargers have physical size constraints and might not fit every phone. If you’re planning on buying a car with a wireless charger, make sure that your iPhone will fit in the charger first.
Just to complicate matters even further, there are four other manufacturers that have wireless charging capabilities in their cars but only across the 2018 models thanks to their new-found inclusion of Qi compatibility. Those are Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC. Of those four, only the nine cars outlined below actually include Qi-capable chargers.
- 2018 GMC Terrain
- 2018 GMC Yukon
- 2018 GMC Sierra
- 2018 Chevrolet Bolt
- 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe
- 2018 Chevrolet Silverado
- 2018 Chevrolet Suburban
- 2018 Cadillac Escalade
- 2018 Buick Enclave
So there we have it, wireless charging in your car may be an option, so long as you have the right car and that the location of the charger is large enough to fit your behemoth iPhone 8 Plus.
Glad we cleared that one up.
