At a time where Apple continues to receive flak for making it harder for people to repair its products, the company has announced that it will provide parts, tools, and manuals to individual customers — starting with iPhone 12 and iPhone 13.
Apple says that the program will soon add Mac computers featuring M1 chips, but it’s all about iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 initially.
It’ll launch in the United States early next year while expanding to other countries “throughout 2022.”
Customers wanting to do their own repair will be able to check the steps required to carry out the work and then send their old parts in for credit once the process is complete. More than 200 individual parts and tools will be offered, Apple says.
To ensure a customer can safely perform a repair, it’s important they first review the Repair Manual. Then a customer will place an order for the Apple genuine parts and tools using the Apple Self Service Repair Online Store.
Following the repair, customers who return their used part for recycling will receive credit toward their purchase.
The new store will offer more than 200 individual parts and tools, enabling customers to complete the most common repairs on iPhone 12 and iPhone 13.
Apple isn’t yet saying how much the parts and tools will cost, but it will be interesting to see how much Apple charge considering the high prices in play for out-of-warranty work at an Apple Store.
