Apple’ has released a new tool that is designed to make it easier for developers to port their PC games to work on the Mac. The toolkit was announced at WWDC on June 5, and now it’s available in beta direct from Apple’s developer website.
The new toolkit gives developers a Metal shader converter that makes it easier for Windows shaders and graphics code to be converted to run on a Mac using Apple silicon.
The idea is that the new toolkit will reduce the development time that would normally be associated with turning a Windows game into one that runs on the Mac.
In fact, Apple says that a port that would normally take months will now take just days if developers choose to use the new tool. Apple has also shared a WWDC session that details how porting can be done, with a section on its website also outlining the tools available to developers who want to make gaming on a Mac easier for users.
Apple’s interest in gaming seems to come and go but this year is one where there is a renewed focus. A new Game Mode is coming to macOS Sonoma, allowing people to give games a chance to run at their best on a Mac, although this is only Apple silicon-exclusive.
That involves limiting background tasks and more in the name of making resources available to ensure the game runs as well as possible.
