Apple appears to be working on releasing a new version of iOS, but it isn’t the iOS 16.4 update that you might have been expecting.
The new update is in fact iOS 16.3.1, but Apple is yet to confirm it and there are no betas available for download either.
Instead, MacRumors says that it’s already seeing the version number in its logs, suggesting someone inside Apple has visited the website while using an iPhone with iOS 16.3.1 installed.
The same logs have accurately foreshadowed the release of several previous updates, including iOS 16.0.3 and iOS 16.1.1 most recently, so they have proven to be a reliable indicator of Apple’s upcoming software releases. Minor updates like iOS 16.3.1 are typically focused on bug fixes, stability improvements, and security patches.
Expectations are that the update will be a simple bug or security fix release, which is why it hasn’t gone through the usual beta testing channels.
The update everyone is waiting for is iOS 16.4, one that we expect to possibly be released to developers next week. If so, we can then expect a public beta release to come a few days later assuming no big issues are identified. From there, the beta process should take a few weeks before iOS 16.4 is rolled out worldwide.
We don’t know what iOS 16.4 will have to offer yet, but we’ll find out once that first beta arrives on our test devices.
