Apple is reportedly getting ready to launch a new line of MacBooks that is aimed at the education market and will target Google Chromebooks. Apple currently uses iPads as its main educational offering for schools and whatnot.
Now, DigiTimes reports that Apple will launch a new lineup below the existing MacBook Pro and MacBook Air offerings that will be designed to compete more squarely with the popular Chromebook.
The paywalled DigiTimes report, seen by MacRumors, claims that the new product will still have a metal casing like current Mac laptops but will use different materials in order to try and keep costs down. A launch isn’t expected until late 2024, however.
The launch timeframe for the alleged new MacBook series appears to be based on a lack of related activity at major Apple suppliers like Quanta Computer and Foxconn, making a launch in the first half of next year unlikely.
33.5 million Chromebooks were reportedly shipped in 2021 and it’s thought that Apple is keen to compete in a market that it has largely left untouched in terms of laptops. Apple did previously sell the standard MacBook for this market, but that was long before it started using its own chips like the upcoming M3.
We can likely expect any budget laptop to use an older generation chip, but that should still ensure speedy performance compared to the competition.
